Stories
I set up this blog months ago. I don't remember why, but it probably had something to do with experimenting with technology. This is finally my first post. I didn't plan to use this blog. I didn't think I had anything interesting to say, but then I enrolled in a storytelling class.
Storytelling is an elective in the program to become a school media specialist. I took it because I want to use stories to hook kids on books and because unfortunately, storytelling ability is not genetic. My uncle used to tell stories in such a way I would be absolutely spellbound. A distant cousin is known as Erma because she tells stories just like Erma Bombeck, if not better. I have been encouraging her to write a book, but she isn't.
This storytelling class is fun, but also one of the hardest classes I have ever taken and also one of the best. There are only 3 assignments, but 2 of them are telling stories to the entire class. We also have had several storytelling exercises. I don't like having the attention of a group of adults. That is what makes it so difficult for me. What has made it fun is listening to everyone else's stories. I enjoy hearing about other people's lives very much, but my life is boring and I don't have anything interesting to tell. At least that is what I thought until taking this class. Perhaps the most valuable bit of knowledge I will take away from this class is that everyone, even me, has interesting stories.
Time to head off to class. Woohoo! Next time I will tell my Power Story. Stay tuned.
